A short board,

The place itself

Nothing here was designed in one go. A path was laid, then a shelter went up, then someone strung lights between the trees and the place became what it is.

The paper strip

Every cup leaves with something on it

Nobody asks for it and nobody gets to choose. A strip of paper goes round the cup, a sprig of dried flowers goes under the strip, and whatever is printed on it is what you get that day. Some people read it and laugh. Some people keep it.

After dark

The garden is
better at night

Plenty of places do a good morning. This one does an evening. Here is roughly how it goes.

  1. 4:00 PM

    The shade moves off

    The tables under the palms come back into use and the lawn stops being too hot to sit on.

  2. 6:00 PM

    The lights come on

    Four strings of bulbs over the grass. This is the hour the garden was built for.

  3. 7:00 PM

    The hills go dark

    Whatever is rising, rises — and the far tables get very quiet for a while.

  4. 8:00 PM

    Last order

    We stop pulling shots. Nobody has ever been asked to leave in a hurry.

Order at the hut, then go and find the corner that suits the hour. Someone will bring it out to you.
