The Lawn

Folding chairs on cut grass, under four strings of bulbs.

Sitting here

The widest part of the garden, and the part that changes most between four in the afternoon and eight at night. By day it is grass, a brick path and a low bamboo rail. Once the bulbs come on it turns into the reason most people stay for a second cup — the light drops to about the level of a candle, the hills go dark behind the pavilion, and nobody is in a hurry to settle up.

Seats
About 20, in folding chairs
Cover
Open sky, with umbrellas at the edges
Best at
From 6pm, once the lights are on
Good for
Groups, long evenings
  • Chairs move — pull a circle together
  • The bulbs come on around six
  • Bring a jacket after eight; it drops
